‘Everything seems; for everything as well as everybody, heretofore all unknown Curios, Stories and Strange Things Told‘ was my first solo exhibition tour in Japan, I welcome you into the world of eight unique individuals; maybe not notable, esteemed or re-known, but no less unique. Encompassing the curious, non-symbolic and domestic, eight citizens of Beppu, recount precious moments from their lives through their chosen treasures, which occupy the most important part of the pictorial space, and form the series of contemplative portrait drawings presented in this exhibition. Produced during a 2-month residency in Beppu, part of the Fountain and P3 art and environment ‘Atelier Interaction Residency Programme UK-Japan’ the artist in choosing to focus on stories by ordinary people has in a way stumbled upon the extraordinary. Beppu, a place where a variety of lives coexist, and where both the magical and enigmatic exist in equal measure, has been a most suitable place for her to undertake a journey into the stories that you too can discover and share in this exhibition.
A Fountain & P3 art and environment collaborative project in partnership with Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, produced in association with BEPPU PROJECT NPO with the support of BEP. lab Operating Committee and exhibited with the generous co-operation and support of Konya 2023, Fukuoka and Nakaochiai Gallery, Tokyo. Residency and exhibitions generously supported by Shiseido Co.,Ltd. and The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation.
