‘In A World Of My Own’ showcases 4 mixed media paintings created by Sarah Tse with animation and sound through an exclusive mobile app ‘In A World of My Own- Sarah Tse’ (free download on Apple Store), written by French interactive designer Rémi Engel. In this collection, Sarah Tse’s artwork depicts a fantasy world combined with fluffy animals from folktales, religious architecture, erotic plants, antique toys and machine components, where human beings can hide from reality and stay innocent forever. This series include ‘Whats the time now, Mr Fox?’, ‘Safari Pyramid’, ‘Kuaizi Etiqutte’ and ‘Turkish Tea Set’ . In recent years, she has been developing unique surfaces by collaging layers of different materials : recycled paper, lace, grass, cloth, sand, resin, moulding paste on wood panels. These unconventional surfaces creates a huge contrast against the delicate monochrome pencil sketches, lightweight watercolor and egg tempera, shifting the traditional perspective of flat drawing towards a more sculptural touch.
Audiences will be asked to download the application from Apple Store (or using the mobile devices provided by the artist). The use of AR (augmented reality) allows the devices to recognize the paintings and track their position in space, in order to add visuals and animations on the screen that overlay with the artwork and exhibition space. This builds the illusion that animals and other objects from Sarah’s paintings are breaking free from their canvas, into a three-dimensional rendering of Sarah’s hand-drawn landscapes for the audience to explore. This first augmented reality collaboration with interactive designer Rémi Engel adds a new dimension to Sarah Tse’s universe, as her static visions are set in motion on the mobile screen via a free downloadable app. The butterfly from ‘Turkish Tea Set’ flies out of the canvas in beat with the cello; the antique toy plane from ‘What’s the time now, Mr Fox’ takes off along with the violin ; and as ‘Kuaizi Etiquette’’s chopsticks fall down with a dramatic piano chord, a pair of pigeons carry an all-seeing-eye over the top of the ‘Safari Pyramid’, breathing a clockwork-like life to Sarah’s enigmatic quartet.
The paintings are not only physical windows into Sarah Tse’s delicate animal world, but digital portals into a vast endless land. An artwork only depicts a specific aspect of an artist’s mind, but will truly resonate when it gets carried through the infinite bounds of our imagination, pushing towards uncharted discoveries. ‘In A World Of My Own’ is a virtual land tread upon, and an art piece to explore.
